My annual trip to Florida in search of tarpon on the fly was great, again. Tarpon were cruising outside the passes in the Ft. Myers area, and our best fly was the black/purple Puglisi-style fly. I released a tarpon estimated at 125 pounds the first morning, and my buddy released a 70 pounder later that day. He added fish of 90 and 100 pounds the next 2 days, and we had many other blown opportunities. We were using Sage Xi2 rods, (11 and 12 wt.) and Cortland Tropic Plus Intermediate lines. The 125#er jumped 6 times, what an awesome sight.
I also spent a few days in the Keys, fishing all over the place from Key Largo to the Marquesas. We caught a couple of small tarpon, a bonefish, and scared the heck out of a bunch of permit. Lots of fish around...switching back and forth between species is challenging and fun. Can't wait for next year! Will attach photos when available...
