On Monday, I didn't work did the usual, walked the dogs, shopped, gassed the car, yard work, napped, tied some #22 trico's on Gammy midge hooks with the expectation of fishing Trico's this morning on the Rush.

Dick Schultz called me last night and mentioned Hugh (Langevin) wanted to go to Mille Lacs today. Who am I to turn down a trip to Mille Lacs to fish smallmouth with good friends?

We arrived at Mille Lacs about 10:00 AM (we're not early risers.) We had every expectation of fishing several of our favorite rocky reefs. Well, the motor barely started and ran. We did get to some rocks out of the COVE (Where we launched.)

Very soon after finding the rocks, we began to see Smallmouth. Hugh caught a Sunfish that was followed by a big Smallmouth. Dick cast his fly behind that fish and hooked up. Hugh landed his Sunfish, cast again and was into his first Smallmouth. We kept on that school of fish and soon I was into a fish that measured almost 22". Both Hugh and Dick said it was the biggest SM they'd ever seen and so it had to be the biggest I've ever caught.

The fishing kept up until 4:00 when we quit. The winds were light or none, the water clear and the fish were cooperative. We totalled 20 Smallmouth, 8 were 19" or bigger, the largest being my 21 3/4. All were caught on flies. We caught fish on large nymphs under strike indicators, Meat Whistles and Clausers and Foxy Clausers. Our best day ever on the big lake and one that exceeded any expectation we might have had.
