Hey new to the forums and its a great site by the way. I searched your forum and read all the posts I could find about topwater lures for muskie but im still not sure which lure would be best for me. I use a 7'2'' H action shimano bob izumi series rod and a corsair CS300 reel, i fish mainly the kawartha lakes with the average fish being around 36'' so nothing to big although I have landed a few nearing the 20lb mark. I mainly fish a mepps giant killer with a 7'' porko but am looking to try a topwater bait any recommendations. As well which leader are the best to use, will heavy wire ones hinder the action and pull the nose down? Thanks in advance, M.Wilson
M.Wilson, I will just list a few of my favs for ya. I am a big user of Musky Buster lures. My favs out of that are the stomper, the lowrider (this one excels in big waves,) phat boy/phat daddy (walk the dogs.)They are all really good. For the situation you mentioned I would prolly start with a topwalker though. Easy to cast, all kinds of noise and commotion, yet isn’t too big. I also like Ty Sennett’s lures too. The new pacemakers are REALLY nice and his Stillwater is a good one as well. If your out on a calm low light period, the Mouldy's Hawg wobbler is a good one. A 130# fluorocarbon Thorne leader is the best option for all of these mentioned except for the walk the dogs, for those you need a straight wire leader with out a swivel....called the jerkbait leader on this website. Hope that helped. Britt
thanks alot guys, you really know your stuff im happy i stumbled upon this site. Ya i once tried to fish an old heddon zara spook (only 5" or so) and the normal 24 inch leader i cast mepps' with just pulled the nose down. thanks alot
