I just ordered a Ambassadeur 7000i HSN Reel and was wondering about how much line I need to put on it? I'm thinking of going with 100 lb test super line. Do most people use a cheaper line for backing? I am going to be using it to throw Double Cowgirls with #10 blades.
Thanks, Erik

Erik,
any mono will work fine. its just to fill the spool so that you end up with a 100yds of braid and to keep that braid from slippin. we use a cheap 14lb test. prolly dont need to get 100lb braid if you dont want too. i use 80lb cortland masterbraid and like the 80lb tuff too. either is really good for that.

I had already bought some 100 lb power pro so I tried that. I first put on some 20 lb mono I had laying around for backing and then spooled the 150 yards of PP but had way too much line on the spool. I had to strip off all the mono and still with 100 lb line I had too much with the 150 yard spool I ended up cutting off about 20 yards, and I spool tight really tight. So a heads up if you use 150 yard spool of 100 lb test power pro it will only hold about 130 yards total.

interesting? I have spooled A TON of these reels and you should be able to get at least half that spool filled with backing then 100+ yards easily? I have no explanation for ya....its a head scratcher for sure. But it sounds like you are set..... so good luck this year!

Maybe the abu 7000iHSN has a narrower spool than other model 7000's?? I have never seen the other models. The 100 lb line is not that much bigger diameter than 80 lb power pro. But there was no way I could get the whole 150 yards on, and no backing.

The HSN stands for High Speed Narrow. So yes the spool is narrow, but a very large capacity spool none the less. its a mystery to me why this happened to ya....maybe the company placed the 300 yd spool in the wrong packaging?

I found this on another website the N does stand for narrow spool. it says it holds 210 yards of 17 lb the other 7000 models hold 325 yards of 17 lb line.
"Here’s the reel for the guy who likes to burn their bucktails across the top. With its 5.3 to 1 gears and a large diameter spool this reel brings in line FAST. Plus the big spool gives plenty of torque for pulling big bucktails and even deep diving crankbaits. The “N” stands for narrow spool and it holds plenty of super line or mono to catch any musky swimming. Shielded stainless bearings will keep this running smooth for years. Carbon Matrix drags assures great hook ups and we find the new lever engagement system easier and quicker to work than the push button. Now with instant anti reverse."

I have that same reel and I am also curious how you filled the spool that full without backing. I have about 130 yards of 100# Tuff Plus which is probably a little larger in diameter then the power pro and I have it filled about half way with backing. The other thing to be carefull of is without any backing on the spool the line ends up slipping. When you turn the handle the spool spins, but the line doesn't grip and the line doesn't turn.

I checked 2 other web site specs for the abu 7000iHSN reel and even went out and looked on the box it says it holds 210 yrds of 17 lb. just about every other abu 7000 holds 325 yrds.

And about slipping on the spool without backing , the spool has that little pin that sticks out so if you wrap your line around that when you tie on there is no way it can slip on the spool.

The diameter of your 100# power pro or Tuff or almost any 100# super line other then the new cortland 100# which has a really large diameter is very similar to that of 17# mono that is used to give the box their numbers. So while the box refers to a 17# mono, you have to compare the diameters of the line when using a super line. The reason for the question, is because you said that you used 130yards of 100# power pro, which is the same as using 130yds of 17# test. The difference in diameter is also the reason why we have to use 80 and 100# tests. Its not that the fish are actually strong enought to break it, but its that the diameter on even a 65# or even 80# is not enough for the lures that we use, in short we break the lines while casting if not using a big enough diameter line with no stretch. Not saying you didn't do it, just after spooling thousands of reels for Thornes, it sounds odd is all.

Is there such thing as a7000HSNi and a 7000iHSN? If there is it is very confusing. Because on your website it says the 7000HSNi holds 325 yrds. of 17lb this could be where our differences come from?

ErikT,
We are going to get through this!haha. There is only one abu 700ihsn. The one on this website is a typo believe it or not. if you have time, why dont ya give me a call at thorne on wed? I will be there around 6pm for the closing shift. This way it will be easier to communicate. I promise things will be much clearer for ya then!

ErikT, there is a difference between the 7000iHSN and the 7000HSN. The latter is the old model and was replaced by the 7000iHSN. It sounds like you have the newest model, the 7000iHSN.

The capacity on the newest model is 210 yards of 17# monofilament diameter.

100# PowerPro is listed as having a 20# mono equivalent diameter, so you will get less than 210 yards of that line on your spool.

What you should do is put a mono backing on your spool (enough to cover the spool a couple of times), tie a line-to-line knot to your superline, and spool up the rest of the way (1/8" from the edge of your spool per manufacturer's suggestion).

he is referring to the typo on our site thats lists the 7000iHSN as the 7000HSNi.....just a typo as far as where the i is placed...along with the incorrect spool capacity. I will let brett know as soon as he is back in town.
