Any body have some general tips for walleye fishing at this time of year. I have been fishing mostly for bass and northerns with crankbaits and spinners. I now seem to a have a desire to try my luck with the finicky walleyes. I have caught a few on crainkbaits which I am sure was by luck. Is live bait more successful the artificial bait? Any tips or advice would be appreciated.
There are many different ways to walleye fish. Some work better than others depending on the type of lake you are fishing. For me, I mainly fish the Canadian Shield and I drag a lot of bottom bouncers when I want to cover water quickly (mostly 2oz but use anything from 1oz to 4oz depending on depth and current) with crawler harnesses (Lindy Red Devil Supreme) and a Berkley Gulp! 6"Nightcrawler.
If I find concentrations of fish I slow down and use a plain lead head jig (1/8oz to 1/2oz) with a Gulp! Minnow on it. I use the 3" up until the end of July and then switch over to the 4". Going to try the Gulp! Shaky Shads this year as they are more of a shiner shape.
This is what works for me where I fish (and my style of fishing/how I like to fish). I still carry Lindy Rigs, bobbers and a large variety of crankbaits, but the bottom bouncer and jig are my 'go to' presentations. Brett Erickson
Thanks Brett, I have a friend that also mentioned the Gulp baits and I will give them a try. Like I mentioned I have been using alot of crankbaits. I seem to be getting a little more serious about fishing the last few years so I would like to try some new techniques. I appreciate the advice.
i always like working the edged of a current or the end of one. in the eventings and the mornings the walleyes sit on the edge and wait for bait fish that have been sucked into the current
Here in northern nebraska (where i live) any kind of lindy rig or spinner rig and sometimes even helicopter rigs work attached to a 3/4 -1 oz. bottom bouncer. I find that they bite best in the first half of summer rather than later on. So we always try gettin out there in early summer.
