I'm up at either Rough Rock Lodge (Winnipeg River north of Minaki) or Muskie Bay Resort(Crow Lake/Lake of the Woods just north of Nestor Falls) in Canada ever other week all summer and I will do my best to keep you informed on any road construction that I may encounter. If you know of any other major inconveniences to traveling to your favorite fishin'holes, post them here to let everyone know.
Right now there is a sizeable area from around Rock Creek/Grantsburg to just past Hinckley on I-35 that they are repaving on the northbound side. Just north of Virginia to about 7 miles south of Cook they are bulldozing a lot of area and looks like they eventually be extending everything to 4 lanes up there. Looks like a big project but it hasn't affected traffic much yet. In Canada, when you come up from Nestor Falls/Sioux Narrows on Hwy.71 and get to Hwy.17/Kenora, Hwy. 17A (17A is the bypass so you don't have to go through Kenora) is 60kph all the way to Hwy.596 which is the turnoff to Minaki. They are blasting some of the high cliffs back and replacing all of the post/cable retaining barriers on the shoulders. Brett Erickson |

Nothing really new to report. They are still working on the Rock Creek to Hinckley section on I-35.
Looks like they are going to make the road from Virginia to Cook a 4 lane road. Still lots of work on Hwy.17 north of Kenora from Hwy.71 to Hwy.596. Lots of areas are posted at 60kph with areas of stop and go traffic. Best advice is to either drive late in the day or on Sundays to avoid the construction. Brett Erickson |

The Rock Creek to Hinckley section is getting close to completion and the Kenora section is coming along as well. The stretch from Virginia to Cook is kicking into full gear and the delays are starting as the big earth movers cross back and forth over the highway. And, of course, if you're coming through the Twin Cities from the south, the 35W bridge is out so take 35E or an alternate route.
